Contested races mark Palos Heights’ April election
Palos Heights voters are set to cast their ballots on April 1, 2025, in an election featuring key races for mayor, city treasurer, and City Council seats.
Mayor
Incumbent Mayor Robert Straz, who has served in various capacities in Palos Heights for more than 40 years, is seeking another term. Straz’s campaign highlights his tenure and focus on infrastructure improvements and economic development.
Ald. Jeffrey M. Key is challenging Straz for the mayoral seat. Key, a long-serving member of the City Council, is campaigning on a platform emphasizing community engagement and introducing new ideas to city leadership.
Treasurer
The city treasurer’s race will also be contested in a rematch from four years ago. Incumbent James Daemicke is seeking re-election, citing his experience in managing city finances. His opponent once again will be financial consultant George Popelka who is focusing on fiscal responsibility and offering a consultant’s approach to the role.
City Clerk
City Clerk Shannon Harvey is running unopposed. Harvey has held the position for several years, managing city records and assisting residents with inquiries.
City Council
The City Council elections include both contested and uncontested races:
- Ward 1: Dan Brennan, who was appointed by Mayor Straz to fill the vacancy left by Ald. Donald Bylut, is running unopposed.
- Ward 2: Incumbent John (Jack) Clifford faces a challenge from Jennifer Case, a community advocate whose campaign focuses on environmental initiatives and green space development.
- Wards 3 and 4: Heather Begley and Patrick V. Scully are running unopposed.
This election also marks a period of transition for the council. Ald. Jerry McGovern is retiring, opening the door for new leadership within the council.
