Happy homecoming

Carnell Tate, who started his football career at Marist before heading to Florida to play at IMG Academy, caught a pair of touchdown passes in a 31-7 Big Ten win over Northwestern on Nov. 16 at Wrigley Field.

The sophomore receiver returned to the area for the first time since his mother, Ashley Griggs, was a victim of a fatal shooting in 2023.

“It was a lot of high emotion and stuff like that, but I had to manage it,” Tate told reporters after the game. “It means a lot to me playing back in my city.”

He had plenty of friends and family on hand.

“They wanted to see me put on a show,” Tate said.

SXU finishes strong
St. Xavier’s football team snapped a four-game losing streak as it finished the season with an impressive 38-6 home win over Judson Nov. 16 in a Mid-States Football Association Midwest Division game.

The Cougars (5-6, 1-4) were at one time ranked as high as ninth in the nation but struggled in the conference.
