Community grieves after 16-year-old Argo High student fatally shot

Students and staff at Argo Community High School are mourning the death of Jaydin Bahena, a 16-year-old junior who was killed in an act of violence over the weekend. Bahena, remembered for his vibrant personality and kind heart, was fatally shot in Summit on Nov. 1, leaving the school and community grieving his sudden loss.

Bahena’s death has left a profound impact on his peers and teachers, who describe him as a positive force who touched the lives of many. His passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes on social media and emails of support to his family, highlighting the deep connections he had made throughout the school.

Outside Argo High on Monday, Gabriella and Assia, two students who knew him, described Bahena as “very sweet and genuine,” adding that he was “always trying to cheer people up.”

Four other classmates, who did not want their names published, similarly emphasized his positive nature, saying he “always smiled in classes” and was “such a nice guy.”

Bahena had a passion for soccer, which he enjoyed outside of school, and was leaving his job at AutoZone, and went home to take  out the trash, when the incident occurred, the students told a reporter.

The shooting occurred around 10:2o p.m. near Hanover and 73rd Avenue. According to Summit police, officers responding to reports of shots fired found Bahena suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical responders from the Summit Fire Department transported him to the hospital, but despite their efforts, Bahena succumbed to his injuries on Nov. 2.

Nearby, police discovered another victim, 34-year-old Jose Rosales, who was found sitting in a vehicle with gunshot injuries. Rosales was also transported to the hospital but did not survive. Authorities have launched an investigation, with assistance from the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force, and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Principal Brandon J. Cotter addressed the loss in a message to students, parents and guardians, acknowledging the difficult days ahead. He emphasized the availability of school counselors and social workers for anyone struggling with grief, and teachers have been instructed to refer students who may need additional support.

As the community grieves, a GoFundMe campaign launched in Bahena’s honor has raised $11,072 from more than 200 donors as of Monday. The funds are intended to assist Bahena’s family during this challenging time and serve as a testament to the love and admiration the young man inspired.
