“Remembering Richard Nixon’s Campaign Visits to Park Forest, 1956 and 1960” will be the Park Forest Historical Society program Sunday, October 20, at 2:30 p.m., in Ryan Hall at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 227 Monee Road. The society will share the story via a display of news articles, photographs, a Nixon Girl felt circle skirt, and a short home movie or two.
Richard and Pat Nixon visited Park Forest on October 25, 1956, when the then Vice President was campaigning for Dwight D. Eisenhower, and on October 29, 1960, when campaigning for Richard Nixon in his effort to become President of the United States.
The speakers and Mrs. Nixon were on a roof extension of Goldblatt’s Department Store on the west side of the Park Forest Plaza shopping center. Thousands of people attended each rally.
The public is encouraged to come share stories of being at one or both of the campaign rallies or come hear about the event. Let the society know if you have digitized photos or home movies of the visits by contacting Jane Nicoll, archivist, at 708-481-4252, or via email on the website, www.parkforesthistory.org.
The program is free and open to the general public.
