Evergreen Park gears up for autumn activities
Summer will soon retreat with autumn beginning this week as activities marking fall will be offered in Evergreen Park.
“I want to thank the senior council and everyone who volunteered and participated in this year’s Memories to Go,” said Mayor Kelly Burke during the Evergreen Park Village Board meeting Monday night. “I want to thank everyone who put this together. It was a successful event.”
Memories to Go is the annual community-wide garage sale that was held Sept. 7 at Yukich Field.
Burke also pointed out there are plenty of activities that will begin this fall, including the St. Gianna Fest-Family Carnival Friday, Sept. 20, through Sunday, Sept. 22, on the parish grounds, 10233 S. Central Park Ave.
The Christmas Without Cancer 5K Run will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 21, at Klein Park, 9700 S. Homan Ave. To sign up for the event, go to www.christmaswithoutcancer.org.
Independence Day Awards
Laura Shallow was on hand for the Evergreen Park Chamber of Commerce to present trophies to businesses, organizations and departments for their efforts during the Independence Day Parade.
The lead entry in the annual Independence Day Parade was the Christmas Without Cancer float. Other award winners were Culver’s, who sponsored the Shriners; the Evergreen Park Fire Department, Flaherty Builders, Humana, sponsors of the River City Rhythm; Ryan and Joyce Construction, United Credit Union, sponsors of the Cirques Experience; and Wintrust, sponsors of the old fashioned fire trucks.
“Our mayor is also very supportive and all our trustees,” Shallow said. “Each year we always point out one department and we want to recognize our wonderful police department who make everything sound and safe.”
Police Chief Michael Saunders requested that a 2017 Ford Explorer be traded in. The request received unanimous approval.
The board approved Rebecca Reese, a librarian at the Evergreen Park Library, to be unanimously approved to become a member of the Evergreen Park District Board. Reese replaces Joseph Depre, who died on Aug. 7.
Other activities this fall will include free Yoga in the Park from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, and Thursday, Sept. 26, at Sexton Park, 9100 S. Rockwell. The open house for the fire department will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at 9000 S. Kedzie Ave. A blood drive will be held during the open house. The E-Waste Household Hazardous Waste collection event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Evergreen Park Senior Center, 9547 S. Homan Ave.
The Evergreen Park Community High School Homecoming Parade will begin at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, starting and ending at the high school, 9901 S. Kedzie Ave.
Oktoberfest will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Community Center, 3450 W. 97th St.
The Most Holy Redeemer Raider Run will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, starting along the parish grounds, 9536 S. Millard Ave.
Burke proclaimed the week of Sept. 17, through Sept. 23, as “Constitution Week” in Evergreen Park. The proclamation urges all citizens to study the Constitution and reflect on the privilege of being an American citizen.
