The occasional rain showers didn’t dampen the spirits of veterans at the Manteno Veterans Home recently. Hosted by the UAW Local 588 Veterans Committee, residents of the home were treated to barbecue, hamburgers, sausage burgers, chicken breast, sweet corn, ice cream, pie, plus all the sides.

There was also a car show, music by Sergeant Major Don Jones, plus the veterans enjoyed the games and prizes that were part of the day’s activities.

Manteno American Legion Color Guard posted Colors, and St. George American Legion fired a gun salute. Anna Winkle, a senior at Clifton Central High School sang the “National Anthem,” and Chaplain Dan Horton said grace.

Thanks to the many volunteers who helped make the event so successful, including the JROTC from Bloom Trail High School, the JROTC from Crown Point, as well as many area residents. The UAW Local 588 Veterans Committee organizes many fundraisers during the year to pay for event.
