The Irish Life Experience (ILE) is a 25-day cultural academic program offered to American and Canadian high school students that consists of a wide variety of classes, workshops, and tours based in three locations throughout Ireland. The goal of the ILE High School Program is to introduce North American students to the essential characteristics and qualities of Irish life. By being immersed in Ireland’s history and culture, young adults can better understand and appreciate a country whose people have played a significant role in the history of Western Civilization. For more information about the program, go to the ILE website.
Accepting scholarships from the IASCW are: Kate Leeders, Joliet Catholic Academy junior; Nolan Hall, Lincoln-Way West senior; and Lauren Potts, Joliet West High School senior. The IASCW has awarded $4,000 to each of three area students toward the program costs of $5,650. Eligible students live in Will County and/or attend a Will County high school. Applicants were asked to complete an application that includes schoolwork accomplishments, extra-curricular activities, and an essay explaining why they wish to travel and study in Ireland.
Including this year’s recipients, the IASCW has awarded scholarships to 56 students since 1983, first through the Irish Way Program and most recently through the ILE. The 2023 IASCW scholars who attended the program were: Cassidy Gray (JCA), Edward Keegan (JCA), and Paul Coffey, JTWest.
At the April 7, IASCW Scholarship Banquet, the 2023 scholars will provide an audio/visual presentation for the attendees. The banquet is open to IASCW members, as well as the public. It will be held at the Knights of Columbus, 129th Infantry Drive, Joliet, from 1:30 – 4 p.m. Included are a full lunch buffet, Irish dance demonstration, and performance by the Providence Catholic Pipe Band.
