Scooters.
Dollars.
Kindness.
Those were the three themes of the day on Feb. 14 at Fernway Park Elementary School in Orland Park thanks to a group of high school athletes in the Buddy’s Helpers group.
There were 102 students in first and second grade at the school who were greeted in the gym with dollar bills, capes and a card in which they could write daily random acts of kindness on.
Then, each student received a free scooter and chaos prevailed as students were scooting all around and in all different directions in the gym.
The giveaway was a part of Random Acts of Kindness Week and it didn’t just involve the kids. The school’s 70-person staff received a lunch for its service.
High school athletes from Brother Rice, Lincoln-Way Central, Hillcrest and George Washington took part. Athletes donated $2 each for the scooters.
“When you give, not only does it help others and make them smile, but it helps the givers emotionally, too,” said Joe Trost, the head of Buddy’s Helpers.
