The Oak Lawn Village Board will consider additional measures to address the migrant crisis during the next board meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9.
The measures will be in addition to a previous vote on Dec. 12 that amended the village’s hotel/motel occupancy ordinance in response to concerns over migrants occupying these facilities for extended days.
“Oak Lawn is a wonderfully diverse and welcoming village, but like our neighboring communities, we do not have the resources to handle hundreds and thousands of undocumented migrants,” said Mayor Terry Vorderer. “This is a problem our federal government caused, and they need to fix it.”
The Chicago Ridge Village Board held a special meeting Dec. 27 at which village trustees voted to prevent unannounced drop-offs of migrants by bus or train in the community. The Chicago Ridge Board was responding to migrants being dropped off recently in local suburban communities with no previous warning.
During the Jan. 9 meeting in Oak Lawn, the village will consider measures to establish common-carrier regulations requiring a Village of Oak Lawn license to operate a bus within the village and prohibiting unscheduled bus stops and passenger drop-offs.
Officials noted that such measures will ensure that the village has prior notice of the intent of a carrier to make a stop within the village to drop off passengers, enabling Oak Lawn to adequately address potential health and safety issues.
“America is a nation of immigrants, but also a nation whose borders need to be respected,” said Oak Lawn Trustee Ralph Soch (6th) about the board’s intentions. “We have an immigrant process, and people need to follow the process.”
While America is a nation of immigrants, these immigrants come into our nation LEGALLY, not illegally , like the Biden administration has and is allowing.
