There’s just something about playing postseason football that suits Nazareth very well.

Saturday afternoon in LaGrange Park, the Roadrunners (6-5) rolled into the Class 5A quarterfinals with a 42-0 victory over Glenbard South.

Quarterback Logan Malachuk threw two TD passes, including a 17-yarder to Jake Cestone. Malachuk also scored on a 35-yard run.

The defending Class 5A champions, Nazareth has won six of its last seven games after beginning the season with four consecutive losses. The Roadrunners have outscored their opponents 214-135 during that timeframe with the only setback coming in a 35-17 loss to visiting Wheaton St. Francis in the last game of the regular season on Oct. 20.

Nazareth, which has won four state titles under head coach Tim Racki, travels to Carmel (10-1) for a quarterfinal contest this weekend. The Corsairs defeated Antioch, 50-7, in the second round.

 

CLASS 7A
Mount Carmel 49, Prospect 15
Quarterback Jack Elliott threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another as host Mount Carmel (10-1) prevailed. Elliott connected with Darrion Gilliam two scores and Alonzo Manning and Kevin Gardner on the others. Elliott also tallied on a 37-yard run.

Rory Small threw a 13-yard TD pass to Gardner and Charles Miles Jr. contributed a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown for the Caravan.

Mount Carmel travels to Quincy (11-0) for a quarterfinal matchup this weekend.

 

CATHOLIC LEAGUE PLAYOFFS
Marist 42, DePaul Prep 13
John McAuliffe rushed 11 times for 102 yards and three touchdowns for Marist (5-5) in its first-round victory. Owen Winters had 10 carries for 122 yards and a TD, and Marc Coy ran for 51 yards and a scores.

Kamil Kokot returned an interception 37 yards for a score.

 

Notre Dame 21, De La Salle 20 (2 OT)
David Coffey scored on a 3-yard run and caught a 10-yard TD pass as De La Salle (4-6) ended its season with an opening-round loss in Niles. Coffey had seven rushes for 47 yards and four catches for 28 yards.

Quarterback Kenyonte Louis had 12-of-18 passing for 213 yards, including an 85-yard touchdown pass to Tremayne Cheers

Louis ran 20 times for 80 yards. Cheers finished with four catches for 131 yards.

Tristyn Hynes (10 tackles), Alex Luevanos (7 tackles, interception), Josue Hernandez (9 tackles) and Myles Green (two interceptions) chipped in for the Meteors.

 

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Saint Xavier 38, Olivet Nazarene 21
Amari Venerable rushed 24 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns and Justin Pringle caught eight passes for 131 yards and two scores for host Saint Xavier (6-3, 4-0) in a Mid-States Football Association Midwest matchup. Cougars quarterback Stuart Ross (16-of-27 passing) threw for 228 yards and two scores. Tyler Barnette returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown, while Peyton Benes drilled a 39-yard field goal.
