Public Arts Commission tour highlights the Treasures of Palos Heights

The Palos Heights Public Arts Commission recently conducted two tours that showed participants more than a dozen Treasures of Palos Heights.
Maria DeCaprio Sunta, who has been chairman of the commission for the past 11 years, conducted the bus tours that visited 17 sites in the city.
The tour started at the Municipal Parking lot at 122nd Street and Harlem Avenue where Sunta gave a brief history of the mural, which was produced by Anne Farley Gaines.
Additional stops included the Flame sculpture in front of the firehouse at 123rd and Harlem, Amanda’s Mural in honor of resident Amanda Claire VanHowe, the Art Garden, the Sporting Life mural designed by David Becker on the back wall of the Public Works garage, Jack at Community Park, Geese in Flight at City Hall, Tranquility (Butterfly sculpture), Storybook Garden, which features 9 hand-painted panels with storyboards for “Little Turtle Gets Lost” by former alderman Jean Snap, Trio of Totems, Compressed Smokestack, the Public Arts Mural, Trinity Christian College, the Ted Gall sculpture in Westgate Park.
Also on the tour were stops at the Palos Heights Recreation Center for Stacked Aluminum Stars by Johnny Blue, the shining stars symbolize the children in the city, Slam Dunk & Kite Girl, Paige Turner at the Palos Heights Public Library; Paige is a young girl who is dressed accordingly for each season, Copper Kenetic Spinner, and sculpture of St. Patrick, St. Brendan and St. Bridget at St. Alexander Church.
