Brian J. Cooney, 54, passed away September 25.

On September 25, the world bid farewell to a remarkable soul, Brian J. Cooney, whose life was an extraordinary tapestry woven with threads of love, passion, and unwavering strength. In the tranquil embrace of Lake Michigan’s waters, he found peace, leaving behind a legacy that resonates in the hearts of all who knew him.

Phyllis Cooney (née Andrews), his devoted wife, was the steadfast anchor of his life. Together, they weathered life’s storms, their love radiating as a beacon for others. Brian embraced his role as a father to Jamie Muzika, holding her close, as he cherished the memory of his late stepson, Jeremy Muzika. His son-in-law, Jake Ferguson, affectionately known as “Big Guy,” found not just a father figure but a true friend in Brian. His bond with his wife’s family was a testament to the depth of his love, forging connections that time nor distance could diminish.

In the rich tapestry of his family, Brian was a vital thread. Born in Evergreen Park to Thomas Cooney and the late Catherine Cooney (née Graaman), his roots were deep and enduring. He shared profound bonds with his brothers, Richard and Sean Cooney, and stood steadfast with his sister, Cynthia DeVivo (née Cooney), and her husband, Daniel DeVivo.

His laughter echoed in the hearts of his nieces and nephews: Raymond DeVivo, Mitchell DeVivo, Kalie DeVivo, Bailee Cooney, Ashley Smith, Taylor Smith, Kayleen Cooney, Sean Jr. Cooney, Breanna Cooney, Riley Cooney, Matthew Andrews (and his wife Lindsey Andrews), Erik Andrews, Caitlyn Anello (and her husband Cameron Anello), Dustin Andrews (and his wife Monica Andrews), and Natalie Fabrizio (and her husband Johnny Fabrizio). To each of them, Brian was more than an uncle; he was a guiding light, a source of endless love, and a wellspring of wisdom.

Jan Dziubek, 81, passed away September 28.

Beloved husband of Maria Dziubek (nee Florek); loving father of Stanislaw (Danuta) Dziubek, Danuta (Marek) Cison and the late Andrzej Dziubek; dearest grandfather of Klaudia, Mark, Natalia, Patrick, Adriana, Anna, Daniel and Andrzej; treasured great-grandfather of Nathan, Henry, Bryan and Owen; dear brother of the late Wladyslaw Dziubek, Helena Wojcik, the late Edward Dziubek and Anna Waclawiak. Also survived by nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Jan Dziubek was born in Poland on October 25, 1941, to the late Anna (nee Harkabuzik) and the late Jan Dziubek.

Jan’s interests throughout his life included gymnastics, music and dance. Jan moved to Chicago in 1978 and worked in construction.

He was a dear partner to Lorraine Perry; former husband of Dina nee Lymperopoulos; loving father of George (Michelle Burfield), Denny (Joanna), Evangeline and Sam Hioureas; cherished grandfather to Constantina, Christina and Maria Hioureas; dearest brother of Voula (the late Stavros), Ruby (the late Harry) Tsatsakis, Kathy (Spiro) Lolis, Penny (the late Aristotle) Stavropoulos, Stratos Hioureas and the late Sotirios (the late Eleni) Hioureas; dearest uncle of many nieces and nephews.

James R. Pobiega, aka “Little Howlin Wolf,” passed away September 12.

Cherished son of the late Alice (nee Samoiloff) and the late Michael Pobiega; loving brother of Patricia Pobiega; dear cousin of Kathleen Rehr and Bobby Pobiega. Also survived by numerous friends.

SmuskiewiczLORETTA ANN SMUSKIEWICZ

Loretta Ann Smuskiewicz, 90, passed away October 3.

Born in Chicago on August 2, 1933, she was the youngest of nine children born to Karol Walczak (born 1888) and Anna (Goryl) Walczak (born 1891), both immigrants from Poland. The other children were two boys named Joseph who died as infants, Wanda, Agatha, Genevieve, Karol, Walter, and Stanley. Loretta was the last surviving sibling.

Loretta, or Laurie, grew up on May Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood of southwestern Chicago. In 1953, she married another young person of Polish ancestry who lived down the block-Alfred (Al) F. Smuskiewicz (born 1930), who happened to be the best friend of her brother Stanley. Al and Laurie raised two children in southwest suburban Burbank, Donna M. and Alfred J. Al had a long, successful career as a journeyman machinist, including for Automatic Lift Truck and Sciaky Brothers.

Laurie worked for the phone company before her marriage, and she later worked for a number of different businesses, including office cleaning companies, 7-Eleven, and Tootsie Roll.

Her life and legacy will continue in the hearts and minds of those who loved her.

A private burial will be held at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park. Arrangements entrusted to care of Damar-Kaminski Funeral Home & Crematorium, 7861 S. 88th Avenue, Justice.

Beloved wife of the late Jan Staszel; loving mother of Stanislaw Staszel, Jan Staszel, the late Andrzej Staszel, Tadeusz Staszel, the late Jozef Staszel and Tomasz Staszel; dear grandmother of 5 and treasured great-grandmother of 1. Cherished daughter of the late Rozalia (nee Daniec) and the late Stanislaw Biel. Also survived by relatives and friends.

She was born on October 4, 1964, in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Christina is survived by her spouse, David Norman Waters, her daughters Bobbi Phyllis Waters and Rae Ann Waters (Kevin), her stepdaughter Deanna Rae Waters, and her cherished grandchildren Jordan Owens, Noah Owens, Parker Owens, Benny Owens, Julien Trejo (Cindy), Jozef Gorka, Ariana Salguero and Taylor Jimenez. Her big brother David Cotterell; her nieces and nephews, Chancey Cotterell (Brianne), Brandon Cotterell, Aaron Cotterell, Amanda Cotterell, Sara Cotterell, and Christi Cotterell.

May her memory bring comfort and peace to all those who knew and loved her.

Clifford J. Winterfeld, 70, of Chicago, passed away September 25.

Clifford was a graduate of St. Rita High School, Class of 1970. He was an avid car guy who has a 1965 Dodge Coronet, which he took to many shows. He was an Army veteran.
