The invitations are in.
As basketball coaches and athletic directors put the finishing touches on the 2023-24 schedules, some of the teams in the Southwest Regional Publishing coverage area have picked up invitations to a pair of prestigious hoops tournaments in December.
The Chicago Elite Classic takes place Dec. 1-2 at Credit Union 1 Arena and area teams scheduled to play in it are Curie, Marist, Mount Carmel, Riverside-Brookfield and St. Laurence.
On Dec. 3, the Lyons girls will play at the Chicago Elite Classic tournament.
The schedules for the boys and girls Classics have not been announced.
The Team Rose Shootout takes place on Dec. 9-10 at Mount Carmel High School. Riverside-Brookfield picked up an invite to that showcase and opens the tournament at 11 a.m. on Dec. 9 with a matchup against T.F. North.
Brother Rice faces Bloom at 5 p.m. and Mount Carmel takes on Hillcrest at 6:30 p.m.
During the Dec. 10 round of action, Curie faces Downers Grove North at 5 p.m.
Cross country assignments
Boys and girls cross country regionals are scheduled to take place Oct. 21.
In Class 3A boys, Morton, Reavis, Curie, Lyons, Riverside-Brookfield and Argo are at the Lyons Regional. Marist, Oak Lawn, Richards, Sandburg, Shepard and Stagg are at the Marist Regional.
In Class 2A, Back of the Yards, De La Salle, Mount Carmel, Solorio and Evergreen Park are at the St. Ignatius Regional. St. Laurence, Kennedy and Nazareth are at the Trinity Regional. Brother Rice is at the Thornridge Regional.
In Class 1A, Chicago Christian is at the McNamara Regional.
In Class 3A girls, Morton, Reavis, Curie, Lyons, Riverside-Brookfield and Argo are at the Lyone Regional.
Marist, Mother McAuley, Oak Lawn, Richards, Sandburg, Shepard and Stagg are at the Marist Regional.
In Class 2A, Back of the Yards, De La Salle, Solorio and Evergreen Park are at the St. Ignatius Regional. St. Laurence, Kennedy and Nazareth are at the River Forest Regional.
In Class 1A, Chicago Christian is at the McNamara Regional.
Boys soccer assignments
Class 1A regionals open Oct. 10, and the Class 2A and 3A regionals begin Oct. 13.
In Class 3A, Marist, Oak Lawn, Richards, Sandburg, Shepard and Stagg are at the Joliet West Sectional.
Morton, Reavis, Curie, Hubbard, Mount Carmel, Kelly, Lyons, Riverside-Brookfield and Argo are at a sectional that does not yet have a host.
In Class 2A, Brother Rice, Goode STEM, St. Rita and Evergreen Park are at the Lemont Sectional.
St. Laurence, Back of the Yards, De La Salle, Kennedy and Solorio are at the De La Salle Sectional.
In Class 1A, Catalyst/Maria and Chicago Christian are at the Herscher Sectional.
Girls volleyball assignments
Another powerhouse Marist-Mother McAuley matchup could be in store in October or early November, as both teams are assigned to the Class 4A Mother McAuley Sectional. Regional action begins on Oct. 23.
Other area teams in the McAuley Sectional are Reavis, Oak Lawn, Richards, Sandburg, Shepard, Stagg and Argo.
The winner of the sectional has a long trip to the Normal Community Supersectional on Nov. 3.
Morton, Kelly, Lyons, Nazareth and Riverside-Brookfield are heading to the Hinsdale Central Sectional.
In Class 3A, St. Laurence, Back of the Yards, Goode STEM Academy, Kennedy and Solorio will play at the Lemont Sectional. De La Salle will compete at the St. Ignatius Sectional. Evergreen Park heads to a sectional that does not yet have a host.
In Class 2A, Catalyst/Maria and Chicago Christian are at the Southland College Prep Charter Sectional.
Girls swimming
Sectionals take place on Nov. 4
Reavis, Marist, Mother McAuley, Evergreen Park, Lyons, Nazareth, Oak Lawn, Richards, Riverside-Brookfield and Argo head to the Hinsdale Central Sectional.
Sandburg, Shepard and Stagg are at the Lockport Sectional.
Back of the Yards, De La Salle and Solorio are at the St. Ignatius Sectional.
Morton is at the Fenwick Sectional.
Sports bits
• Sandburg’s girls golf team won the SouthWest Suburban Conference championship on Sept. 21. Brooke Adams, Katie Wehlus and Alyssia Jarquin earned all-conference honors.
• Stagg boys soccer coach Mike Kealy earned his 200th career win on Sept. 21 in a 3-0 triumph against Homewood-Flossmoor.
• Staggs girls tennis team scored a perfect 24 as the Chargers won first in each flight at the Shepard Varsity Cooper Classic on Sept. 23.
• Marist’s sophomore girls volleyball team entered the Rich Township Invitational and not only faced five varsity teams, but won all five matches to claim the tournament title.
