The new Professional Women’s Hockey League is forming, and Palos Heights native and Sandburg graduate Kendall Coyne Schofield will be a part of its historic first season.
Schofield was one of the first three players to sign for the Minnesota franchise, a trio that also features fellow U.S. Olympians Kelly Pannek and Lee Stecklein.
All three inked three-year deals.
“With the signing of three of the top players in the world, Minnesota cements its foundation as a team built on excellence,” the team’s general manager, Natalie Darwitz, said in a news release.
“We are thrilled they are the first three players to join Minnesota as we build a championship team.”
The 31-year-old Schofield has a ton of accomplishments in her career including winning one gold and two silver medals in the Olympics. She also collected six gold and three silver medals in International Ice Hockey Federation play.
“Signing this contract is a reflection of so many people who have worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality,” Schofield said in a news release. This is monumental and it is only the beginning.”
“Kendall is one of the premier faces of women’s hockey,” Darwitz said. “She was a catalyst for the creation of the Professional Women’s Hockey League. Kendall has already distinguished herself as a highly accomplished player and will have a tremendous impact on the team.”
The league will feature six teams – Minnesota, Boston, New York, Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario.
The plan is for the 24-game season to start in January and end in May or June.
