Dear Editor:
I just watched the Peotone School Board meeting from August 21 and am horrified by what I saw. Multiple English teachers spoke about a situation at the school where books they have been teaching are now being challenged as inappropriate.
Three of my children attended Peotone schools, and I always was pleased with the education they received. They have gone on to have successful lives, and a good education was part of that. The English classes my children took utilized books that covered many topics, including diversity and racism. This seemed especially valuable, as it helped them see and explore a world they did not have in our small, non-diverse community.
While I monitored the curriculum that was provided, I had and continue to have total faith in the teachers and librarian of our district. They always have sought to provide our children with the education and resources to become well rounded and critical thinking people.
To those who are hearing stories of inappropriate or harmful materials being taught, I would suggest you read the material being taught, with an eye to it presenting a different perspective for the students to learn from, before you take the word of someone who seems to want to inflame the community.
