When it comes to Argo’s quarterback situation, coach Phil Rossberg has some options.
In the Argonauts’ 49-0 nonconference victory over Muchin Prep to open the season Aug. 25, both of their senior signal-callers performed well.
Ryan Edwards completed four passes for 46 yards and two touchdowns, while Tadeo Sierra was completed three passes for 26 yards and a TD. Sierra added three carries for 19 yards and a touchdown.
“We placed an emphasis on doing our job,” Rossberg said. “Our quarterbacks go back and forth. Both are seniors. Ryan’s our starter and Tadeo started last year.
“Ryan worked his tail off in the offseason and he has the athletic ability of running the ball, making good decisions and putting the ball where it needs to be. Tadeo is also a great kid who does a great job.”
Ryan will likely start Saturday afternoon at Bloom.
It helps a quarterback when his skill position players are strong in their own right, as is the case with Argo.
Junior running back Steve Holmes accounted for 43 yards and two TDs on five carries, while junior Javoris Cotton scored on a 24-yard reception. Senior Dan Gil added an 8-yard TD catch, and senior wide receiver Beandre Dugans finished with two catches for 22 yards and ran for a 60-yard touchdown.
“Beandre is an incredible route-runner,” Rossberg said. “He gets great separation with how crisp he is. I’m expecting big things from him, to be sure.
“If I need to get the ball is someone’s hands, it’s Beandre.”
Argo’s defense was stout in shutting out the Mountain Lions.
Junior linebackers John Marrotta and Maciej Jarosz contributed six and five tackles, respectively. Senior defensive lineman Abel Alvarado had four tackles.
Argonauts junior kicker Kacper Lobas was a perfect 7-for-7 on PATs kicks and added five touchbacks on seven kickoffs.
“We had a couple of guys who showed up,” Rossberg said. “Maciej is a powerhouse and a strong kid who wants to be physical. He’s one of our captains and definitely the leader of the defense in the middle. Abel is also another leader for us.”
