District 230 Supt. Robert Nolting gave a shout out to the seniors on the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee.
The committee is made of students from all three high schools – Sandburg, Stagg and Andrew – who serve their time meeting with Nolting and other district officials to talk about concerns from the student perspective.
“A lot of times they talk about what they want to talk about and that’s one the blessings of having the opportunities to meet with these kids,” Nolting said at the June 29 board meeting. “But we also have topics that we really want to engage them with.
“Predominantly this year, that had a lot to do with their strategic framework. When you talk about student voices and how we guide our framework, this is the committee that is front and center.”
Students on the committee graduating from Sandburg were Averey Bartley, Niko Delis, Rosella Irfan and Camden McEllligott.
Students from Stagg were Teyona Givens, Metzli Gonzalez, Massa Haj Ali, Kate Harty, Humbuerto Plascencia, Zachary Richards, Karina Tomecki, Arina Tomecki, Amar Ahmed, Hala Kanaan and Katerina Alikakos.
Students from Andrew were Emily Bobber, Talyn Brown, Adora E-Ogbeide, Noah Montoya, Abeer Sweis and William Wilkens.
“The principals have a challenge ahead to replace those incredible seniors with some awesome freshmen,” Nolting said.
Ticket clarification
Schools in Illinois have been working with local police on ticketing students for misbehavior and there is a bill in the Illinois House that wants that practice to stop.
While ticketing is still on the books, the district board clarified one wrinkle on what happens when a student gets a ticket but doesn’t live in the town where the school is located.
“My understanding is that if a student is ticketed on site, the ticket would be with the municipality in the district,” he said. “If an Andrew student who lives in Orland Hills were to get ticketed on campus, they would be ticketed by Tinley Park.”
If students or their families can’t pay the fine, they could perform community service for their punishment.
Partners with chambers
District 230 will host a Business After Hours with three local chambers of commerce organizations at 5 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Administration Center in Orland Park.
The idea is for the district schools and the businesses in the local communities to network and partner up.
