The first ceremony started at 8 a.m. at the future site of the District 104 Administrative Building, that will the built at 7509 W. 63rd Street in Summit, on the corner lot between Marquette Bank and Rudy’s Grill.
Later ceremonies were for new secure entrances at Wharton School in Summit and Walker School in Bedford Park.
Dr. Troy Whalen, Superintendent of District 104, opened the ceremony by thanking all for coming, including the District 104 Board of Education, employees at the school’s, elected state, township, village officials, and member of community.
Board Member Travon Davis spoke of how important it was to him to see the secure entrance additions being added at Walker and Wharton considering what has been happening at schools across the country.
V.P. Trinh, an architect from ARCON Associates, who designed the new additions spoke briefly at each location.
After the ceremony at the future administrative site, everyone moved over to nearby Wharton School.
School principal Raquel Modiest and School Board President William Green discussed the need for entrance security.
After the official groundbreaking at Wharton, everyone moved over to Walker School in Bedford Park.
Interim Principal Jeff Moore welcomed everyone and explained that a secure entrance would also be built at Walker to ensure the safety of the students.
Light refreshments were served afterwards.
