The Chicago Ridge Ridge Central Fifth-Grade Student Council experienced nature up close and personal at the annual Chicago River Day 2023 cleanup at the Lucas Berg Nature Preserve in Worth on Saturday, May 13.

The students, along with over 50 volunteers of residents, community groups and government officials participated in the cleanup of this approximate 72-acre site.  The event was sponsored by Friends of the Chicago River.

“The students enjoyed themselves and also learned the importance of keeping beautiful sites like this clean,” said student council sponsor and teacher, Kari Lynn Fickes. “It was a good hands-on experience that hopefully will lead them to continue this commitment of preserving nature and our communities in the future,” she added.

The Lucas Berg Nature Preserve is a “hidden jewel” in Worth.  The Park District is currently working with other government agencies to move forward in having this site open for public recreation.
