Katarzyna Czernik (nee Rydz), 85, of Oak Lawn, formerly of Chicago’s Archer Heights neighborhood, passed away April 11.

She was the beloved mother of Anna (Donat) Czerny and Grzegorz (Zofia) Czernik; loving grandmother of Izabela and Justyna; dearest sister of six; dear companion of Frank.

Funeral services were held April 15 at Our Lady, Mother of the Church Polish Mission. Interment Lodz, Poland.

ROBERT G. GRUENER

Robert G. Gruener, 94, longtime resident of Palos Heights, passed away peacefully at his home on April 17.

He was the beloved husband of the late Marlene (nee Coleman).  Loving father of Cheryl Murphy and Alesia Gruener. Cherished grandfather of Shannon Murphy and Sean Murphy.

Funeral services were private.  Arrangements entrusted to the Becvar & Son Funeral Home, 5539 W. 127th Street, Crestwood.

MartinPATRICIA E. MARTIN

Patricia E. Martin (née Daggett), 89, passed away at her winter home in Naples, Florida, on April 16.

She and her late husband Will were residents of Palos Park for more than 50 years, where she served on the boards of many nonprofits including the Southwest YMCA, Palos Park Service League, Palos Fine Arts, and The Center. She co-chaired the restoration of Civil War-era McCord House, now an arts center, and she was active in Palos Village Players community theater.

Pat was known for her sense of humor, thoughtfulness, upbeat attitude, and generous spirit. Every spring she gathered huge bouquets of daffodils from her yard and delivered them to local nursing homes, and in her later years, she loved to bake cranberry scones for family and friends.

Pat was a graduate of Northwestern University and a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. Her professional career spanned serving as an editor for the Pullman Company magazine, bridal consultant for Bonwit Teller, runway model, writer, and actor. She was featured in TV commercials and print ads for companies such as PepsiCo, AT&T, and General Mills, and she enjoyed being an extra in films.

Pat and Will shared many adventures in their nearly 64 years of marriage. They flew a B-26 bomber to Nicaragua in 1964 – she navigated, he piloted – and her story of the trip was featured in the Chicago Tribune the following year. Pat was a proud mother of her two daughters, and her six grandchildren filled her with joy.

She was preceded in death by husband Will Martin, brother Marvin Daggett, and parents Vernon and Helen Daggett. Pat is survived by daughters Suzanne Martin (Hart Weichselbaum) and Cassandra Moran (the late James J.), sister Lois Gernbacher, brothers Delta (Karen) and David (Roxann) Daggett, cousin Darrell (Carol) Anderson, grandchildren Claire, Paul, Alexandra, Christina, Anastasia, and Andrew, and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Pat’s life will be held this summer. Donations in her memory may be made to the International Rescue Committee (www.rescue.org) or Wannigan Park, a regional nature preserve near her hometown in Minnesota (www.wanniganpark.com).
