Eyesores mar an otherwise nice neighborhood

Congratulations to 13th Ward Ald. Marty Quinn and 23rd Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares on their re-elections. May the coming years bring you both many opportunities to serve and make a difference in our neighborhood. I called Alderman Quinn’s office on Feb. 16 to ask about the vacant and empty properties at 3700 W. 63rd St. and 4619 W. 63rd St. These shabby eyesores make our neighborhood look bad and lower our property values.

I was told that the alderman would call me back. That was over a month and a half ago. I don’t think I’ll be getting a call back, but I do hope something can be done about these long-neglected properties.

Thank you to Alderman Quinn and State Representative Angela Guerrero-Cuellar for holding an electronics recycling day on March 25. These recycling events give us the opportunity to bring our old, unused electronic devices like printers, TVs, telephones, VCRs, etc.

I’m sorry I didn’t share this information in a timely manner. I didn’t hear about it until it was too late. I would have shared the information in a previous column. Hopefully, I will find a recycling event elsewhere. I have a few electronic items I need to drop off. If anyone knows of another recycling event, let me know.

If you have any foam items you’d like to recycle, bring them to the Dart Container Corporation, 7575 S. Kostner. If you are driving south on Pulaski, turn west at Daley College and drive about one block. They have a cage-type structure with bins for food container foam and packing foam. This structure was previously located about a half a block west of Pulaski. The new location is a half block further, at Lot C.

West Lawn welcomes the Brother David Darst Center to its new home at 6336 S. Kilbourn (built decades ago as the headquarters of the Marian Fathers). Their “ministry on the move” formerly located in the Bridgeport community is now settled into their new location and would like to invite all neighbors and friends to an evening of prayer, music, mingling, food and drink on Saturday, April 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. You will have an opportunity to tour their new location and learn more about their organization. Questions, call (312) 225-3099 or visit their website at darstcenter.org.

The Southwest Regional Senior Center, 6117 S. Kedzie, will be giving away free, fresh produce to seniors on Friday, April 7 from 1 to 2 p.m. Call them at (312) 747-0440 for more information.

The Midway Baseball and Softball Association, located at Madigan Park (4701 W. Marquette), will begin their spring season the first week of May, Monday through Friday with a starting time of 5:45 p.m. Weekend hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Midway Baseball will be hosting an Easter party on Saturday, April 1 at 2 p.m. at their beautiful baseball field. There will be an Easter egg hunt for kids 12 years and younger and their parents. Bring your own basket. There will be candy, prizes and photos with the Easter Bunny.

Congratulations to neighborhood activist Eddie Guillen on his recognition by the Chicago Police Department for his three years of volunteer services. The ceremony took place on March 16. Many of my neighbors are grateful for Eddie’s free snow shoveling service for the past two years, the Love Fridge at 6600 S. Pulaski which provides free food for anyone who needs it,  the neighborhood cleanups Eddie continues to organize, plus so much more.  Eddie, thank you for all you have done and continue to do for the 23rd Ward.
