College Notebook | Grace Hynes helps Maroons end NYU’s unbeaten run

Mother McAuley alum Grace Hynes was the University Athletic Association’s Athlete of the Week in women’s college basketball for the timeframe ending January 17.

Hynes, a senior at the University of Chicago, had 22 points and 10 rebounds as the Maroons’ handed top-ranked New York University its first loss of the season, 71-57, on Jan. 13. She followed that with 25 points, six boards and four assists in an 80-56 home victory over Brandeis University on Jan. 15.

Over those two games, Hynes shot 47.2 percent from the field (17-for-36), 37.5 percent from 3-point range (3-for-7) and 76.9 percent from the free-throw line (10-for-13).

Hynes has received two other plaudits this season. She was named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week on Nov. 28 and was the UAA Athlete of the Week for the period ending Nov. 21.

In guiding the Maroons to a 15-1 record through their first 16 games, Hynes leads the Maroons in scoring average (15.4 points per game), total points (246), rebounds (99), rebounds per game (6.2) and free-throw percentage (.792, 57-for-72). She is second in 3-point percentage (.412, 21-for-51), 3-pointers made (21), and third in steals (16) and assists (30).

Panther Pride
Eastern Illinois junior Cameron Yarbrough was one of six nominees for the Ohio Valley Conference’s Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 25.

At the John Gartland Invitational, hosted by Indiana State University on Jan. 21, Yarbrough had two first-place finishes and set two meet records.

In the 60-meter dash, the St. Laurence graduate posted a winning time of 6.85. In the 200-meters, Yarbrough won with a reading of 22.24.

With Yarbrough leading the way, the Panthers’ men’s team placed second with 138.50 points behind the host Sycamores (172).

Best and Brightest
Two area student-athletes earned places on the fall 2022 All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Academic Team.

One of the 115 men’s soccer players recognized for his work in the classroom was Saint Mary’s University junior Daniel Sessler.

Sessler, the Cardinals’ goalkeeper, is a graduate of Riverside-Brookfield.

Among the 88 men’s cross country athletes feted was sophomore Gabriel Kuecker of Bethel University. Kuecker is a Chicago Christian graduate.
