Verdelle M. Salm, 89, of Kankakee, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2023, at Miller Healthcare Center in Kankakee. Born June 1, 1933, in Bonfield, she was the daughter of Harry F. and Marie P. (Schmidt) Buckman. Verdelle married Robert G. Schafer on January 23, 1965. He preceded her in death on April 25, 2001. She married Jacob Salm on June 26, 2010, and he preceded her in death on December 20, 2018.
Verdelle’s perfect afternoon was one with plenty of sunshine and a beautiful view of the swans on the river. She may have decided to head to Blue’s Cafe after her visit to the park, where she spent so many wonderful hours catching up with her friends and having a piece of her favorite pie. As the days grew longer, she would follow up with calling her family and friends to make her day complete. Verdelle was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Surviving are one son, Kenneth (Melissa) Schafer of Rochester, Minnesota; one daughter, Karen (John) Komperda of Trevor, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren, Alexa Robbins, Hannah Robbins, John Komperda, Patrick Komperda, Vivienne Schafer, Blake Schafer, and Evan Schafer; and one sister, Dorthea Buckman of Kankakee. In addition to her husbands, Verdelle was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Isabelle Geiger; and two brothers, Gerald Buckman and Arthur Buckman.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service was held on January 13, at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais, with Rev. Karl Koeppen officiating. Inurnment followed at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Kankakee.
