Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced Circuit Judge Daniel Rippy sentenced Sean Woulfe, 30, of Orland Park, in the fatal 2017 crash that resulted in the death of Lindsey Schmidt, her unborn child, and her children Kaleb, Owen, and Weston. On July 21, Woulfe entered a plea of guilty to four counts of Reckless Homicide and one count of Reckless Homicide of an Unborn Child (all Class 3 Felonies) following a mistrial in March. Woulfe was sentenced to two years in prison on each of the five counts, to be served concurrently.
On the morning of July 24, 2017, pregnant 29-year-old mother Lindsey Schmidt of Beecher was driving her three sons – six-year-old Owen, four-year-old Weston, and 19-month-old Kaleb – to Bible classes at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crete. Woulfe was driving his 2002 Chevy S10 at more than 80 mph in a 55 mph zone and failed to obey a stop sign. His vehicle collided with the 2014 Suburu Outback the young mother was driving near the intersection of Yates Avenue and Corning Road in Beecher.
The pregnant mother and Kaleb were pronounced dead at the scene. Weston died at Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago the following night, and Owen died from his injuries two days later.
Woulfe will receive 172 days credit for time he already has served in custody. He’ll still need to serve about 191 days; that amounts to about six-and-a-half months.
Glasgow thanked Assistant State’s Attorney Adam Capelli, Director of Victim Witness Services Nichole Pasteris, the Will County Sheriff’s Office, and the Beecher and Peotone fire and emergency personnel for their commitment and dedication in this sensitive case.
Woulfe’s defense attorney, George Lenard, asked Judge Rippy to reconsider Woulfe’s sentence on January 6th but that request was denied.
