Happy Hanukkah, which begins at sunset on Dec. 18. Throughout this eight-day holiday, candles are lit, gifts are given and a dreidel is played. What is a dreidel? It is a spinning top.

Ellie’s Holiday Toy Drive is asking for new and unwrapped toys to be donated to the Pediatric Oncology Department of Loyola Children’s Hospital. The drive will be held through Dec. 21. Toys can be dropped off at either of 23rd Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares’ offices: 6247 S. Archer or 3954 W. 63rd St. on from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Some of the students of Sts. Bruno and Richard School recently enjoyed a field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry. They enjoyed boarding a United 727 airplane hanging from the sky and taking pictures with a pilot. Some also got on board a real John Deere tractor.

They also got to view the various Christmas trees from around the world. Several of the Chicago area museums offer free days throughout the year. Please check their websites if interested in going on a free day. I can’t locate 2023 free days as of yet for the MSI.

Don’t forget to honor Deacon Sal from St. Bruno at the Mass on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 4:30 p.m. After the Mass, head to the school for some refreshments.

Want to help get the little toddlers ready for school? There is going to be a Kiddie College at Pasteur Park, 5825 S. Kostner. College will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. weekdays, from Jan. 9 through March 24. You can register online or in person. The fee is only $105 for 12 weeks of fun.

Congratulations to the young women’s bowling team from Curie High School on their victory over Hancock. Shout outs go to Jalissa Morones on a score of 117 and Lucy Ortiz for a score of 191. Keep up the good work.

When I saw their photo on social media it brought back many memories for me. I loved bowling and played with my high school classmates from Lourdes right over at good old Miami Bowl. If things were still the same as in the 1970s, Curie’s team could have just walked across the street to bowl. So many good times at Miami Bowl I am sure where shared by all of us still in the community. There was the bowling, the snack shop, the billiards, the bowling banquets and as I got older, the bar.

West Lawn neighbors – be on the look out for Santa and the Grinch. I hear they are going to be traveling through the neighborhood on Sunday, Dec. 18. Unfortunately, I don’t have the exact map of the visits.

Happy Birthday on the 19th to Diane Marszalik Domalewski, on the 20th to Mary Gliwa and Marquette Park’s Kenny Ivancicts and on the 22nd to Paula Svatos Prium.
