Hello darkness my old friend…it’s November.
There are some important dates and things to remember as we enter the month. First off, this weekend we fall behind. Yes, it’s that time of year to set our clocks back one hour and enter into darkness during the evening hours. Goodbye, Daylight Savings Time. We won’t be pushing forward until March 12, 2023.
Second, we must all remember to do our duty and vote by Tuesday, Nov. 8. My husband and I voted early at the Archer Heights Branch Library. There are a nice bunch of workers there as well.

Third, we honor our veterans on Nov. 11. The students of Sts. Bruno and Richard School will be honoring veterans on Nov. 7. A celebratory Mass will be held at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7th at St. Richard Church. All who have served our country are cordially invited to attend. Refreshments will be served after the Mass.
The students would be honored if local veterans can attend so they can express their gratitude. A display will also be created honoring St. Bruno and St. Richard family members who are veterans and/or active-duty service members.
It’s starting to get cold, but wait until it gets frigid. I have two coats never worn, and every year I say I want to donate them. This year I will be at 23rd Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares’ winter coat drive on Saturday, Nov. 26 from 10 a.m. to noon. Drop off your gently used or new coats at the Archer Heights Credit Union, 6554 W. Archer. If the date does not work, please drop the coats off at the 23rd Ward office, either at 6247 S. Archer or 3954 W. 63rd St., from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
There have been some street signs in the community that have been bent. Unfortunately, the signs are usually bent on purpose by gang members to mark their territory. Our Hamlin sign was recently bent. We did report it; and though it may have taken a little while, we now have a new sign. Recently noticed were bent signs at 58th and Hamlin. Again, several neighbors reported this and we await them being replaced. To report bent or damaged street signs, you can call 311 or use the CHI311 app on your computer.
Happy Birthday wishes go to Mrs. Rosemary Cannon on Nov. 8. I still remember the lunch we enjoyed with Mary Rose at Nick and Vito’s before the pandemic started. Birthday wishes are also extended to Karen Sala on Nov. 11.
Flu shots, as well as COVID-19 boosters, are available at no charge from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 at the West Lawn Branch Library, 4020 W. 63rd St. Walk-ins are welcome. This public health event is sponsored by 23rd Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares.
