The West Lawn Branch Library, 4020 W. 63rd St., is a haven for reading, writing, learning and more. Every Friday at 9:30 a.m. the library offers yoga classes for adults. There are movies for kids every Saturday afternoon. On Saturday, Sept. 10, an informational event called Diabetes 101 will be presented from 1 to 2 p.m. You can get information and register for all programs by calling the library at (312) 747-7381.
The Chicago Public Library now has a program called Brainfuse. This is an online informational site for students that is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Students can also connect with a live tutor from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day. There are lessons, practice tests, video tutorials and more. This is free with your Chicago Public Library card. Thank you to Miami Joe for your newsy phone call including information on where to get some good beet soup. Joe, you asked what is going on with a couple of restaurants in other neighborhoods. I asked around and haven’t been able to find out any information about them. If I do find out anything, you will be the first one I call. Thanks for your call. It was delightful as always.
The first week of September is National Sweet Corn Week. As is my custom, I plan on attending the Hoopeston Sweet Corn Festival in Hoopeston, Ill. This takes place from Sept. 1 through 5. I like to go because my mom grew up around the Hoopeston area and it’s fun to see the places I visited as a kid. I also like visiting my cousin, Maggie, who will be selling her home-baked cinnamon rolls at the festival. She has a truly deluxe food truck. It is very state of the art. Her cinnamon rolls are the best I’ve ever had.
The festival will have tons of food, a ponytail contest, the Little Corn Eaters Fun Run and a car show. There will be lots of musical groups like the Cougar Trap Band, Nuthin’ Fancy Band, Wise Guys Band and The Seasonal Disorder Band.
At the end of the fest you will go home with happy memories and a trunk filled with all the free corn you want.
