Getting busy with blueberries

Did you know that blueberries rank high in antioxidant activity, as compared with other fruits and vegetables? One cup of fresh blueberries has about 85 calories. Blueberries can also keep in the refrigerator for up to 10 days, if they are kept in a breathable container with paper towels. Remember to rinse the blueberries before eating.
Summer months are the harvest season for blueberries; for those reasons alone, I am heading to the blueberry festival in southwest Michigan. Of course, I will be back home by the time you read this, making blueberry pancakes, pies and muffins.
Walking home from Pete’s Market this past Thursday with my little pushcart full of groceries, I had the pleasure to run into 23rd Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares. She was visiting Peck School for its back-to-school celebration.

I wish I had known sooner about the event, because I would have certainly mentioned it. But anyway, it looked like a success. Children and parents were lined up for a good block. The playlot is great. Hearing the children scream, yell and play on the amusements is wonderful. I think it sure beats video games.
The Archer Heights Branch Library is having a back-to-school fair this Saturday, Aug. 20. There will be school supplies, healthy snacks and activities. The event runs from 1 to 3 p.m. There will also be a drawing for scooters.
Hurry up and read The Princess Bride by William Goldman. There will be a book and film discussion on Wednesday, Aug. 24 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The discussion is being held at Palermos of 63rd Street, 63rd and Hamlin. It does require registration, so please visit chipublib.org.
St. Turibius will be holding its parish festival on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 5 to 9 p.m. There will be raffles, food, games and a beer garden. I will take a walk on over for the fun.
Raffle tickets are being sold before and after the Masses for a chance to win a 55-inch Smart television.
It’s time to register for fall events at our local parks. Most activities start in mid-September. Registration can be online or in person.
Happy birthday former Southwest News-Herald Editor Joe Boyle. It’s been going on 16 years since I first interviewed with him. Joe left this paper in 2015. It’s been a good 16 years with this paper I’ve met a lot of readers whom I enjoy chatting with.
