These folks know their lawns

Have you driven or walked around our neighborhood lately? I have seen so many beautiful flowers and shrubbery. Residents have certainly been busy planting and landscaping, mowing and weeding. There are some lovely gardens and green lawns. West Lawners seem to know a thing or two about lawns!

It’s probably too late to make plans for this year, but perhaps next year, the 13th and 23^rd Wards might want to have a “garden walk” at some point in the summer. People could register their gardens to be included in a designated garden walk.

A garden contest might also be fun. There could be categories so that everyone can be included, from prettiest garden, best veggie garden, most unusual landscaping, nicest window box, best urn, etc.

Business owners could be included as well. Stores and restaurants often have containers of flowers and hanging plants that spruce up the front of their shops. The owners could enter these in the contest.

Well, anyway, it’s just a thought. In the meantime, I offer my compliments to all the gardeners in West Lawn. Thank you for beautifying our neighborhood.

Speaking of keeping our neighborhood clean and lovely, thank you to all dog owners who clean up after their dogs. To all dog owners who just leave the mess for someone else, shame on you. Dog poop ruins lawns, gets stuck on the bottom of kids’ gym shoes, and attracts rats. Dog owners, please do your part by being responsible pet owners.

In addition to dog poop, the problem of loose dogs is still an everyday occurrence. Irresponsible dog owners continue to plague our neighborhood. Call 311 if you spot any loose dogs.

Envision Community Services is hosting an event called “Back 2 School” on Saturday, Aug. 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 6435 S. Kilbourn. There will be free children’s books and school supplies, as well as helpful information and resources. Local vendors will be at this event.

The West Lawn Branch Library, 4020 W. 63rd St., has some activities coming up. On Monday, Aug. 8 at 6 p.m., the library will host a game night for all ages. There will be Pokemon card games and chess. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

On Tuesday, Aug. 9 at 2 p.m., the Lego Club will meet. This club is for children ages 5 to 13. Kids will create and share ideas as they build a Lego creation.

Wednesday, Aug. 10 is Family Craft Night at 6 p.m. There will be a variety of crafts for the whole family. Materials will be provided. All are welcome.

Thank you to the Drury Lane Theater in Oak Brook for donating free tickets to our Chicago Lawn (8^th) District police and to the police who work in other districts but reside in the 23rd Ward. Drury Lane is currently showing the play Steel Magnolias. Thank you to all who serve and protect our neighborhood.
