A childhood memory of a letter to the president made my notifications cup runneth over with snark. Who are these broken people who would compulsively sling mockery and negativity on a post about the last birthday of a good American, who lived a pious life of consequence and substance?

Editorial: Unlikely Reporter
By Stephanie Irvine In honor of National Newspaper Week, I’m writing my unlikely story about how I never intended to become a reporter. It’s true — it just kind of happened, albeit not entirely by surprise. Growing up, I was no stranger to newspapers. The Herald News and Chicago Tribune were staples on our kitchen […]
Editorial: It’s not about clicks
By Andrea Arens I’m a special education teacher. I’ve been teaching students with severe trauma and behavior disabilities for more than 15 years, but my first love, my first degree was in Journalism from Columbia College Chicago. I interned at NBC Chicago and watched in amazement as Jerry Springer was put on the 10 p.m. […]
Editorial: No One is Above Scrutiny
By Dena Sattler For more than 30 years, I worked among fellow journalists who were passionate watchdogs reporting on the actions of people in power as a way to hold them accountable. I’m proud to see that important work continue, from the reporting on local government budgets to investigations of corruption in the halls of […]

Letter to the Editor: Good Food for All
By Bob Heuer, HNA Networks Republicans and Democrats don’t exactly see eye to eye on much these days. They did though on June 20 at the county board meeting in Joliet. Board Chair Judy Ogalla (R-Monee) secured unanimous support for “Good Food For All.” The policy proposal will be presented for adoption at next month’s […]

Letter to Ed.: Nagel
Dear Editor: As the wife of a Vietnam-era Army veteran, I hold a special place in my heart for the parents, siblings, spouses, and friends of those who served. I can’t help but think of all the men and women who have gone to fight for this great nation and didn’t return home. While we […]
