Malik Campbell

A robbery suspect from Orland Park was captured last week by Chicago police after he crashed his car on the South Side and tried to flee on foot.

Police said the incident began on March 12 in the parking lot of Orland Square Mall when a woman reported her purse was stolen.

Police said the offender fled the scene in a vehicle prior to their arrival. A description of the man and his vehicle was immediately relayed to neighboring law enforcement agencies.

Shortly later, Midlothian police found the suspect vehicle near 159th Street and Laramie Road.

Midlothian police followed the vehicle to the area of 111th Street and Interstate 57, where the Chicago Police Department was waiting to assist. The vehicle then fled, and Chicago police initiated a pursuit.

The chase ended in the 3300 block of South Wood Street when the driver, later identified as Malik Campbell, 25, of Peoria, crashed and took off on foot.

Campbell was taken into custody by Chicago police and positively identified by the victim whose purse was stolen.

Campbell was charged with robbery.

He was ordered detained at Cook County Jail. He is due in court on March 26 at the  Bridgeview Courthouse.
