Swimmers splashed through the pool, cyclists powered through stationary bike rides and runners hit the track Sunday morning during the sixth annual Tri for a Cause event at Moraine Valley Community College.
More than 70 participants took part in the indoor triathlon and duathlon held at the college’s FitRec facility, located at 9000 College Pkwy in Palos Hills. The event drew athletes of varying experience levels along with families cheering on young competitors.

Participants could choose between two main events. The indoor triathlon included a 10-minute swim, 20-minute bike ride and 15-minute run. Those opting for the duathlon completed a 15-minute run, followed by a 20-minute bike ride and another 15-minute run.
The event welcomed competitors ages 12 and older, while younger athletes had the opportunity to take part in a Kid’s Duathlon designed for children ages 8 to 12. The youth race included a five-minute swim followed by a 10-minute run.
Triathlon and duathlon participants rotated through waves that began in the morning, allowing athletes to select their preferred start time during registration.
Later, young competitors took their turn in the Kid’s Duathlon, filling the facility with cheering families and energetic participants.
The event was organized by Jana Terborg, assistant director of programs at Moraine Valley Community College and her team.
“We were inspired to put together this event for the health and fitness of our community,” said Terborg, of Crestwood.
Organizers also encouraged participants to bring donations for the Moraine Valley food pantry, Project Care, which provides food and resources to students in need.
“We pick a different cause each year,” Terborg said.
Throughout the morning, the FitRec facility stayed busy as athletes rotated between the pool, bikes and track while volunteers helped keep each wave moving on schedule. Friends and family members gathered along the sidelines, offering encouragement as competitors worked their way through each stage of the event.
