Dozens of students and staff at Richards High School braved icy water Wednesday afternoon, taking part in the school’s first Polar Plunge to raise money for Special Olympics.

About 50 participants gathered on the school’s football field during lunch periods to take the plunge, an event organized by Assistant Principal of Activities and Enrichment Deborah Swanson. The effort quickly surpassed expectations, raising more than $7,200 — more than double the school’s original $3,000 goal — with additional donations expected in the days following the event.

Staff and students at Richards High School participated in the Polar Plunge on Wednesday.

The Polar Plunge is a longtime fundraising tradition for Special Olympics in which participants voluntarily jump into frigid water to raise money and awareness for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Schools, police departments and community groups across Illinois host their own versions of the event each year, often during the winter months.

Swanson said bringing the event to Richards was about more than just fundraising.

“This event is a great way to raise money for Special Olympics while building community at Richards,” she said.

Students and staff lined the sidelines of the field to cheer on those participating, many bundled in winter coats as plungers prepared to face the cold water. Despite the chilly conditions, the atmosphere remained energetic and celebratory as each participant took their turn.

Richards High School, located at 10601 S. Central Ave., hosted the event for the first time this year, and organizers said the strong turnout and fundraising totals made it a success.

Swanson said she hopes the Polar Plunge will become a new annual tradition at the school, giving students and staff a chance to support Special Olympics while strengthening school spirit.

Additional donations were still being collected following the plunge, with organizers expecting the total to grow even higher in the coming days.
