The theater lights dimmed on Saturday, February 21, at Emagine Theatre in Frankfort as the world premiere of GIFTED: The Docuseries honored the extraordinary life of Maddie “Maddog” Grobmeier. The docuseries, created by Robert Horsey, tells the stories of families who faced unimaginable loss and chose to give life through organ and tissue donation.
Horsey, who has been a critical care nurse for 27 years, with most of that time dedicated to organ donation and transplantation, said, “Telling donor stories is what this is all about. Our goal is to provide education about organ donation and transplantation. The docuseries represents the sacrifices they and their families have made to help others live. I want to inspire more people to give the gift of life.”

Maddie was days away from her 18th birthday when an asthma attack tragically ended her life, leaving her family heartbroken. Her parents, Cyndi and Frank, along with her sister Sam, made the courageous decision to donate Maddie’s organs, eyes and tissues, creating a legacy that extended far beyond their family.
The premiere episode took viewers on an intimate journey through their grief, love and resilience, showing how Maddie’s generosity reached from Chicago to as far away as Seoul, South Korea. Her donations of bone, skin, connective tissue and corneas healed and saved countless lives, illustrating the extraordinary reach of one selfless act.
In the wake of Maddie’s passing, her mother developed the Maddog Strong Foundation in her honor. Cyndi Grobmeier serves as President of The Maddog Strong Foundation, a public 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to inspiring the next generation of organ and tissue donation advocates. The foundation provides education, promotes donor registration and encourages families to have meaningful conversations about donation. It also serves as the fiscal sponsor for Gifted Productions, supporting the docuseries and helping bring donor stories to a national audience. More information about the foundation and its mission can be found at https://www.maddogstrong.org/.
The docuseries also highlights other families whose courage created legacies of hope. Episode 1 followed Heather Miller, a nursing student at West Virginia University whose life ended in a tragic car crash just weeks before graduation. Heather’s last wish was to help others, and her family honored that wish by donating her organs so four people could live on. The episode chronicled the Miller family’s journey through grief while raising awareness for donation and funds for nearly 200 nursing scholarships in Heather’s name. Viewers also met the first responders and healthcare professionals who cared for Heather and one of her organ recipients, showing the ripple effect of a selfless decision.

Episode 2 captured another courageous family’s journey from despair to hope while exploring the inner workings of an Organ Procurement Organization. Through a partnership with Mid-America Transplant in St. Louis, Missouri, the episode offered behind-the-scenes access, showing how these organizations connect donor families with recipients and the critical role they play in saving lives.
Horsey emphasized that GIFTED also confronts the complex issues surrounding organ donation and transplantation.
“There are many issues associated with organ donation and transplantation,” he said. “These issues span from political to financial, from spiritual to moral. Because healthy organs continue to be buried every day and the need for those organs is enormous, these issues have to be addressed. GIFTED: The Docuseries will tell the complete and accurate stories of both tragedy and victory to encourage a nationwide social discussion.”
The premiere at Emagine Theatre gave audiences a chance to experience Maddie’s story firsthand, honoring her life while inspiring meaningful conversations about organ and tissue donation. Viewers witnessed how grief and compassion can coexist and how a single act of generosity can transform countless lives.
All three episodes of GIFTED: The Docuseries will be available for streaming beginning in April, allowing audiences nationwide to witness these moving stories and the lasting impact of families who chose to give life in the face of tragedy.
GIFTED: The Docuseries leaves a lasting message: even in tragedy, the choice to give can create hope, educate the public and ensure that a single life continues to make an extraordinary impact.
