An early morning train derailment in Chicago Ridge has snarled traffic in that village and Oak Lawn as well as forcing Metra to cancel service on the SouthWest Service line from Manhattan to Union Station.
The Chicago Ridge Police Department said the train derailment occurred about 4:45 a.m. within the village limits between Ridgeland and Central avenues.
Chicago Ridge police said Ridgeland Avenue was closed between Southwest Highway and Washington Street and Central Avenue was closed at the railroad tracks between 107th Street and Pleasant.
Police said the train was not carrying hazardous materials and there was no danger to the public. No injuries were reported.
Emergency personnel are on scene working closely with railroad officials to assess the situation and ensure the area remains safe, police said.
As a result of the derailment, all SouthWest Service line train service has been suspended for an unknown amount of time. Commuters are encouraged to seek alternate transportation and monitor Metra’s official channels for service updates.
Motorists should expect significant traffic congestion in the surrounding areas and are encouraged to use alternate routes whenever possible. Please avoid the area to allow first responders and railroad crews to work safely and efficiently.
Nearby Richards High School was scheduled for a late start on Wednesday and the school notified families of the derailment so students could allow more time to get to school.
