The Christmas holidays are finally over, and the city of Countryside is already looking ahead to another holiday, a green-colored one.
Mayor Sean McDermott announced that retired Cook County Circuit Court Judge Pat Rogers will be the parade’s grand marshal at its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 7.
Rogers is likely a familiar face for anyone who’s attended various meetings of suburban boards over the years.
Judge Rodgers is often called upon for the swearing-in ceremonies of elected officials.
It’s not unusual for the parade to be discussed as Countryside is annually among the first communities to have a St. Patrick’s Day parade.
That’s because it’s easier to book pipe and drum bands and Irish dance companies – often more economically – than when closer to the big day.
“March 7 is right around the corner for our St. Patrick’s Day parade,” McDermott said during the meeting.
Rogers, a former Township of Lyons Supervisor, served 12 years as a judge and is a longtime resident of Western Springs, McDermott said.
“He’s thrilled to serve as our grand marshal,” McDermott said.
Funds collected from the parade will be split between the St. Cletus Church Food Pantry and Troop 19, the mayor said.
“St. Cletus recently had the largest number of families coming through for assistance,” McDermott said of the food pantry.
Ald. John Finn (1st) “has graciously agreed to serve as parade chairman once again. We thank him for his assistance in this important endeavor,” McDermott said.
It’s the 10-year anniversary of the parade.
