Amazon announced Tuesday that it would be closing all of its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores amid a shift to more online same-day delivery and expansion of its Whole Foods division.

The e-commerce juggernaut said it would close 57 Fresh stores and 15 Amazon Go locations nationwide. The company operates 10 stores in Illinois including Fresh locations in Oak Lawn and Tinley Park.

The company said some of its Amazon Fresh stores would be converted into Whole Foods stores and more than 100 new Whole Foods stores are planned. It did not indicate whether the two local stores would be converted.

The Oak Lawn store opened several years ago and the Tinley store opened in August 2024 after a lengthy delay.

The stores are expected to close on Sunday, February 1.

Amazon acquired Whole Foods for about $13.5 billion in 2017 and has been experimenting with expanded food offerings in its stores.

Amazon’s same-day delivery service for groceries is currently available in more than 2,300 cities and towns, with grocery delivery available in 5,000 locales. The company said it plans to expand the service to more communities in 2026.

All this comes just a few days after the company won approval to build a superstore at 159th Street and LaGrange Road in Orland Park. It plans to sell groceries, general merchandise and prepared foods in the store, which is expected to be about 230,000 square feet. Consumers will be able to shop in-person or online.

  1. There are more than 2 local Amazon Fresh stores. There is also an Amazon Fresh in Morton Grove. Been there for years.
