Here’s something most people don’t know: while everyone’s focused on Christmas morning, some of the biggest needs for kids actually come after the holidays are over.

The Orland Fire Protection District has a secret weapon for extending holiday magic — their toy drive runs all the way through January 5, 2026. That means you can turn post-Christmas guilt about overspending into something meaningful by donating to kids who are still waiting for their special moment.

The drive partners with Toy Box Connection, a south suburbs nonprofit that works year-round to “brighten a child’s life with a gift, a book or a memorable day of fun.” While other toy drives wrap up on Christmas Eve, this one recognizes that childhood doesn’t pause for calendar dates.

Here’s the real insider tip: teenagers get forgotten during most holiday drives, but they’re desperately needed here. Think DVDs, video games (old systems work fine), gift cards, or gaming accessories gathering dust in your closets.

You can drop off new, unwrapped toys at any of the six OFPD fire stations or the Administration Building at 9790 W. 151st Street. The firefighters make it easy — just walk in and hand over your donation.

“Together, we are one big community of love, lifting spirits of children and families every chance we get,” says Toy Box Connection owner Michelle Maxia.

The secret? January generosity often means more than December donations.
