Going to the DMV got a whole lot more convenient for residents of Burbank and nearby communities – at least for one day.
On Wednesday, November 5, the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office, in partnership with state Senator Mike Porfirio, state Representative Angelica Guerrero-Cuellar, and Mayor David Gilgenberg II, hosted a mobile DMV at the Burbank Fire Department’s fire house at 6530 W. 79th St. This pop-up DMV issued, renewed, and corrected driver’s licenses and state IDs, processed vehicle registrations, and issued vehicle stickers. Written and road tests weren’t available, but for quick fix needs, the Mobile DMV did what you needed it to do.
The services were initially available by appointment only through Sen. Porfirio’s office, (reachable by phone at 708-430-2510, but the services were opened to walk-ins after the morning rush had been served. Around 25 locals had been served mid-day, and I took advantage of the opportunity to renew my driver’s license for $30 in just 5 minutes.
“We heard about it and thought we’d come by because it was a lot simpler than making an appointment at the DMV,” explained one Bridgeview resident while waiting for his turn. He was updating his vehicle sticker and getting his REAL ID.
“We’re committed to bringing our Secretary of State services directly to Illinoisans regardless of where they live,” said Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. “Whether it’s a mobile unit scheduled at a local library, senior center, school or even the Burbank fire station, we’re ready to respond to provide this convenience and meet the needs of residents. This allows families and individuals with busy schedules to visit the DMV without having to travel far or waste valuable time.”
According to the Secretary of State’s office, the event in Burbank was just one of 272 mobile DMVs that have been held across Illinois and have provided a total of 12,600 transactions.
