Brookfield Zoo Chicago is calling on the public to help name one of the most fascinating — and famously adorable — denizen at The Living Coast: axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum).

This critically endangered amphibian came to the Zoo this spring for care after being confiscated by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at O’Hare International Airport. Now under professional care, axolotls serve as ambassadors for their species, helping guests learn about the challenges facing wildlife due to illegal trade and habitat loss.

Axolotls have also leapt into the spotlight thanks to their quirky charm, regenerative superpowers and a starring role in the popular video game Minecraft, where they’ve become a fan-favorite mob

To raise awareness for their conservation story, Brookfield Zoo Chicago is inviting the public to help name an axolotl under its care at The Living Coast. Guests can vote for their favorite name below by visiting Brookfield Zoo Chicago’s InstagramFacebook and X now through Wednesday, Sept. 24.
