Shop the Black Friday sale to support nature and get 25 percent off all online Forest Preserve merchandise: The Forest Preserve District’s Black Friday sale runs from noon on Wednesday, November 22, through Friday, November 24. All online merchandise will be 25 percent off with promo code BLACKFRIDAY25. Stay tuned in to the online store page as more deals are rolled out in the coming days for Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and Giving Tuesday.

Spend Museum Store Sunday at a Forest Preserve gift shop: Four Forest Preserve District gift shops are participating in the November 26 Museum Store Sunday, which encourages holiday shoppers to support their local museums and nature centers by buying “distinctive and unique items.” The Forest Preserve’s gift shops are open from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays and are located inside Four Rivers Environmental Education Center in Channahon, Hidden Oaks Nature Center in Bolingbrook, Isle a la Cache Museum in Romeoville, and Plum Creek Nature Center in Crete Township near Beecher. The gift shops will be selling items made from recycled or reusable materials, produced in fair-trade environments, locally sourced, or produced by women-owned businesses around the world.

See the world like a bird or a bug with UV light experience at Four Rivers: Step into a dark room at Four Rivers Environmental Education Center in Channahon to see how creatures in the wild view color on the ultraviolet light spectrum. The ultraviolet light experience room is part of the ‘Golden Opportunity’ traveling exhibition, which runs through December 31.

“There’s a whole world out there that we don’t see,” said facility supervisor Jerome Gabriel. “Flowers, rocks, sticks, and animals are all viewed differently across multiple light spectrums. It gives us a better appreciation for how things in nature have evolved. There is often a lot more purpose behind things than what we realize, or we can see.”

Board approves balanced budget; property tax rate will decrease: The Forest Preserve District’s Board of Commissioners approved a 2024 budget that includes an estimated 6.86 percent drop in the property tax rate and funding for many improvement projects throughout the district, including trail connections, additional preserve amenities, and restoration work.
