Despite some recent rain and suddenly falling temperatures, the last few months at the Water’s Edge Golf Course in Worth has been heartwarming.
“The September numbers are unbelievable,” said Trustee Laura Packwood about the local course. “Rounds of golf are down but everything else is up, and that is because of youth golf is going on.”
Packwood, who is the chair of the golf committee, talked about the recent results at the golf course during the Worth Village Board meeting Tuesday night.
The trustee said the Orion management firm that is based out of Missouri has been doing an exceptional job caring for all facets of the course.
“The golf shop, (driving) range, and food and beverage are all doing well,” Packwood said. “Food and beverage are just hitting it out of the park.”
Packwood summed it up by stating that Water’s Edge has produced over $1.8 million in revenue over the past season.
“The revenue from golf is phenomenal,” Packwood said.
Act of kindness
Trustee Brad Urban wanted to thank Trustee Rich Dziedzic for donating a bike to a youth with special needs who had his stolen. The incident took place in Palos Heights and Dziedzic made sure the youth received a bike after it was taken.
“It’s great how a community can come together,” said Urban, who was emotional about the generosity of Dziedzic. “He did a good job and this is just a great thing.”
Veterans Day event
Mayor Mary Werner reminded members of the board and residents that the annual Veterans Day observance will take place Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Veterans Memorial Park. Participants and guests can gather at 10 a.m. for doughnuts, coffee and other refreshments at the North Palos Fire District Station, 7112 W. 111th St., which is next door to the memorial.
The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. If it rains, the ceremony will take place in the firehouse.
Werner also mentioned that a “Spooky” Spaghetti Dinner will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at St. Mark Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 11007 S. 76th Ave. All proceeds will go to Anita Korensky Scholarship Fund.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youths. Kids ages 3 and under can eat for free. Raffle prize baskets will be available. A “family friendly” costume contest will be held. Residents who want to volunteer or have questions, can contact the church office at stmarkworth@comcast.net.
Board members are considering their options on approving specific daycare centers, tutoring facilities, and commercial schools. At previous meeting, trustees said they have nothing against these learning centers. However, more of them are opening in the village where once businesses were located, which means less revenue for Worth.
A decision was not made Tuesday as they consider all their options, including coming up with specific zones or creating buffer areas. However, buffer areas can be more complicated because implementing some could violate some federal or state laws.
Trustee Pete Kats, the chairman for the public safety committee, said the police department performed admirably last month, making 42 arrests.
“That is the highest number of arrests in some time,” Kats said. “I want to thank them for being out there and doing their job.”
Urban, who is the chair for the public works committee, said that bacteriological samples for August were taken and tested. All samples passed and are IEPA compliant.
Public works also repaired a water main break on the 10700 block of Rutherford, and a sanitary section repair was completed on the 7100 block of 108th Street, Urban said.
An ordinance was approved for a maintenance service agreement between the village and Braniff Communications, Inc., which provides the siren system. An engineering services agreement was approved for Robinson Engineering for manhole rehabilitation design and construction engineering.
A business license was tentatively approved for owner Karem Alashwal to open Crater Aden Auto Repair, Inc., 10539 Southwest Highway. An ordinance was approved for a special use permit to operate the auto repair facility.
An ordinance was also approved for Alakaber Jewelry, 11228 S. Harlem Ave., to reduce the vehicle parking spaces for the business. Owner Hasdan Adi will run the jewelry store operation.
The Worth Cruisers Car Club will hold a “Trunks With Treats” event from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at the Water’s Edge Golf Course, 115th and Harlem Ave. A kids and adults costume contests will be held, along with candy for trick-or-treaters, a trivia contest, and music and dancing.
Trick-or-treat hours
Village Clerk Bonnie Price reminded the board and residents that trick-or-treat hours for the youngsters will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31.
