Local hockey legends Kendall Coyne Schofield and Abbey Murphy are back with the U.S. women’s hockey team at the 2024 Women’s World Championship.
Schofield, a Palos Heights native and Sandburg graduate, is playing in the Worlds for the 10th time.
Murphy, an Evergreen Park native and Mother McAuley graduate, is in her third year on the team. She also plays for the University of Minnesota, where she is leading the NCAA in goals.
In 2022, Murphy and Schofield played for the silver medal-winning team at the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Schofield did not play hockey in 2023 during her pregnancy and after the birth of her first child. She scored her first international goal since 2022 in a 4-0 win over Switzerland at the 2024 Worlds on April 3 in Utica, New York. She had two assists in a 6-0 win over Czechia on April 5, and scored two goals and was named U.S. Player of the Game in a 5-3 win over Finland on April 6.
Murphy had an assist against Czechia and a goal and an assist against Finland.
