The Orland Park Police Department issued 169 citations for distracted driving in April, part of a month-long enforcement push that also resulted in four arrests and 103 citations for other traffic violations during April’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month enforcement campaign.
“Distracted driving remains a serious problem in Orland Park, and one moment of inattention can change lives forever,” Orland Park Police Chief Eric Rossi said. “High-visibility enforcement one way we remind drivers that safe driving requires their full attention.
“April may be over, but our message is not. The village will continue enforcing distracted driving laws and urging motorists to put the phone away whenever they get behind the wheel,” Rossi said.
The chief said the stepped-up patrols are all part of a concerted effort to ensure motorists are driving safely and within the posted speed limits. Police last month made dozens of arrests for aggravated speeding, which is traveling 35 miles per hour over the posted speed limit.
April’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month is a national initiative to reduce crashes caused by phone use and other distractions. The Orland Park Police Department increased patrols and enforcement during the month to raise awareness of the dangers.
Orland Park police joined forces with the Illinois State Police, local law enforcement and highway safety partners for this enforcement effort.
