Under crisp spring skies and surrounded by budding trees and lakeside views, runners and walkers gathered bright and early April 11 to hit the trails for the annual Run Wild 5K at the Lake Katherine Nature Center, turning a morning workout into a celebration of nature and community.
The race wound along the nature center’s scenic paths, offering participants the chance to spot local wildlife along the route. About 200 participants took part in the event, which welcomed both seasoned athletes and casual walkers looking to enjoy the outdoors.

Hosted by the Lake Katherine Nature Center, the event served a larger purpose beyond recreation. Proceeds from the Run Wild 5K support conservation efforts, environmental education programs and habitat restoration projects, helping preserve the natural space for future generations.
Inside the E.G. Simpson Clubhouse, attendees could visit a series of informative tables staffed by representatives from local organizations. Among them was Erin Stevenson, founder of the Do Good Movement and the She Can! Initiative, who shared information about community engagement and service opportunities.
The Lake Katherine Nature Center & Botanic Gardens is located at 7402 W. Lake Katherine Drive in Palos Heights. The 158-acre site features a 20-acre lake, hiking trails, a waterfall and the E.G. Simpson Clubhouse, making it a year-round destination in the Chicago Southland area.
Organizers describe the event as an opportunity to connect the community with nature while promoting healthy activity. The Run Wild 5K continues to draw participants each year, reinforcing the center’s mission of conservation and education through community engagement.
