Richard Cannella has spent 53 years serving the Village of Bridgeview — first as a Marine from 1967 to 1973, then as a member of the Bridgeview Police Department.

On Sunday, the Lions clubs of Bridgeview, Argo-Summit, and Justice recognized him as Veteran of the Year.

He was one of eight honorees at the annual Super Sunday Awards, held at the Bridgeview Community Center. The event, sponsored by Mayor Steven Landek and the Village of Bridgeview, drew its largest crowd to date.

The awards celebrate educators, first responders, and community members whose service has shaped the area. This year’s honorees included three teachers named educators of the year by their school districts, two police officers recognized for community impact, an emergency manager with 62 years on the job, and a local restaurant owner known for giving back.

“These are the people who make our community work,” said Brian Bernardoni, a Justice Lion who emceed the two-hour event. “They show up. They stay. They care.”

Shannon Sundberg was named Argo District 217 Educator of the Year. Lisa Vokac earned the same honor from Indian Springs School District 109. Lizette Rayas was recognized by Summit School District 104.

Constantina “Dina” Lhotak, a Bridgeview Police Department crossing guard, has kept students safe for 38 years. Martin G. Vilimek, director of the Bridgeview Emergency Management Agency, has served the community for 62 years, assisting fire and police departments during emergencies.

Armando Dominguez, a Summit police officer and school resource officer, was honored for 24 years in law enforcement and his work building connections with students and families.

Joey’s Red Hots in Justice received the Business of the Year award for its generosity to the communities it serves.

The event opened with Boy Scout Troop 13 posting the colors and leading the Pledge of Allegiance. The District 104 Mariachi Band and Folklorico group performed, and Lions Past District Governor John Chisum gave the Invocation and Benediction. Attendees enjoyed lunch from The Patio, with cakes and pastries donated by Talerico Bakery of Summit.
