Democratic challenger Miranda Hernandez ended Frank Aguilar’s tenure as 16th District Cook County Commissioner.

Hernandez, an aide to State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke, outpolled Aguilar and Leticia Garcia, a registered nurse. 

Complete but unofficial results show Hernandez received 8,842 votes, to Garcia’s 8,191 and Aguilar’s 8,028. Garcia led in the city precincts in the district while Hernandez easily carried the suburban precincts.

The district covers parts of the Southwest Side and nearby suburban communities.

In the south suburban 6th District, Worth Township Supervisor Patricia Joan “Trish: Murphy won the Democratic nomination to replace Donna Miller, who was leading a crowded field in the 2nd Congressional District.

Murphy’s mother, Joan Murphy, used to hold the same position.

She outpolled Sylvester Fulcher, Wesam Shahed, Antoine Bass, and Veronica Bolling-Franklin. Shahid was running second with 10,950 votes to Murphy’s 12,200 votes.

The 6th District includes parts or all of Bridgeview, Justice, Hickory Hills, Palos Hills, Chicago Ridge, Alsip, Crestwood, Midlothian, Oak Forest, Tinley Park, Orland Hills, Matteson, Richton Park, Park Forest, Steger, Sauk Village, Lynwood, South Holland, South Chicago Heights, Glenwood, Homewood and East Hazel Crest.

County Board President Toni Preckwinkle held off a challenge from Chicago Ald. Brendan Reilly in the Democratic primary.

“The people have spoken, and I want to thank my family, campaign team, supporters, volunteers and friends across Cook County for all that they have done over the past six months,” Reilly said.

The race to replace Democrat Dick Durbin as U.S. Senator drew a host of candidates for both the Republican and Democratic primaries.

Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, who had the backing of Gov. JB Pritzker, came on strong at the end to top the list of 10 Dems running for the seat.  She beat former congressmen Robin Kelly and Raja  Krishnamoorthi.

Six Republicans were vying to carry the party’s banner in November. Don Tracy easily won the nomination.

Four Dems ran to replace retiring Comptroller Susana Mendoza. Margaret Croke outpolled Karina Villa, Holly Kim and Stephanie Kifowit to win the nomination to run against Republican Bryan Drew in the November General Election.
