Students, staff and community members at Victor J. Andrew High School braved icy water Wednesday afternoon as the school held its annual Polar Plunge fundraiser in support of Special Olympics Illinois.

The event took place March 11 outside the pool area at the northwest corner of the building, where 135 participants took the plunge while classmates, teachers and supporters cheered them on from the sidelines.

The Polar Plunge has become a spirited tradition at Andrew, combining school pride with a commitment to inclusion and community service.

This year’s event raised more than $32,000 for Special Olympics Illinois. Participants collected donations ahead of the plunge before jumping into cold water to show their support for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Last year, the school raised more than $47,000 with more than 120 students, staff members and community participants taking the plunge. The effort earned Andrew recognition as the Top School in Illinois for fundraising through the statewide Polar Plunge program.

Funds raised through the event support year-round sports training, competitions and programs offered through Special Olympics Illinois.

The atmosphere Wednesday was festive, with music, cheering and plenty of laughter as each participant stepped forward for the chilly challenge. For many students, the plunge served as both a show of school spirit and a way to support classmates and athletes across the state.
