The months-long search for missing Mount Greenwood resident Dan Davis came to a tragic end Monday after his body was discovered in a wooded area near the Blue Island and Alsip border, officials said.
Blue Island police and fire crews responded about 3 p.m. Monday after a body was reported near railroad tracks beside property in the 3300 block of Wireton Road. The Chicago Police Department and Illinois State Police also assisted at the scene, according to a statement from the City of Blue Island.
Authorities later confirmed the remains were those of Davis, 59, after notifying his family.
Davis was widely known in the Mount Greenwood area through his longtime role as the sound engineer at 115 Bourbon Street in Merrionette Park. For years he worked behind the scenes at the well-known South Side music venue, becoming a familiar and well-liked figure among performers, staff and regular customers.
He was last seen during the early morning hours of Nov. 25 at 115 Bourbon Street.
Earlier that night, Davis had been involved in a vehicle crash a few blocks away near 119th Street and Hamlin Avenue. Family members said they believed he may have suffered a head injury and later became disoriented.
When Davis did not return home, his disappearance quickly drew attention across Mount Greenwood and surrounding communities. Volunteers organized searches in the weeks and months that followed, combing nearby neighborhoods, forest preserves and other areas while distributing flyers and sharing information online.
His daughter, Wendy Davis, launched a Facebook page called “Find Dan Davis” to coordinate updates and search efforts. The page gained thousands of followers and became a central place for the community to share information, organize searches and offer support to the family.
Community members also gathered at 115 Bourbon Street for vigils while hoping for Davis’ safe return. Private search-and-rescue canine teams joined volunteers during the search.
Investigators previously said surveillance cameras captured Davis in Blue Island the day after the crash. Footage showed him walking through residential yards before he was last seen on camera near St. Donatus Church in the 1900 block of Union Street.
After the discovery Monday, Wendy Davis confirmed her father’s death Tuesday in a post on the “Find Dan Davis” Facebook page.
“It’s an eerie feeling — thank God this terrible chapter of constant unknown is finally over. But now starts a new terrible chapter without my smarter, goofier, and relentlessly selfless other half. This is the news we’ve all been expecting in a way, but nothing really prepares you for it. I’ve never laughed harder with anybody than I have with my dad. And I can’t wait to do it again someday.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Blue Island police.
