Worth has always been referred to as the “Friendly Village” but residents can add another moniker during the Lenten season.
The village is earning a reputation for the next several weeks as the place to go to enjoy a fish fry.
The fact that two locations offer fish frys each Friday in Worth was duly noted at the village board meeting on March 3.
Trustee Laura Packwood, who serves as the chair for the golf committee, mentioned that fish fry dinners are being served from 4 to 9 p.m. Fridays through April 3 at the Edge Bar and Grill, 7205 W. 115th St.
Packwood said that the dinners have been greeted enthusiastically and huge crowds have attended the fish frys, which can be found near the golf course. Cod dinners are the favorite but the menu at the clubhouse has been expanded.
While one popular spot for fish fry dinners is worth celebrating, fish is also on the menu from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Fridays through April 3 at the Marrs-Meyer American Legion Post 991, 11001 S. Depot St.
Trustee Brad Urban, who assists in serving the fish fry dinners at the Marrs-Meyer Post, also mentioned that huge crowds have been coming.
“This past Friday we served up to 343 meals,” Urban said.
The fee for adults is $18 and kids ages 12 and under can dine for $10. Children under age 3 can attend for free at the Marrs-Meyer Post. Carry-out dinners are $19.
The menu at the post consists of cod, catfish or shrimp. Soup and salad are also served, along with a baked potato and french fries. Desserts are also available.
Mayor Mary Werner also said that she has been hearing from residents who enjoy attending both locations. She also noted that Water’s Edge Golf Course has also been receiving rave reviews.
“Comments about the golf course have been so positive,” the mayor said.
Trustee Rich Dziedzic also had some favorable comments about the two fish frys.
“There is a lot of fish being served in Worth,” Dziedzic said.
Polar fun
Trustee Bill Nilles, who serves as the chairperson for the public safety committee, reminded residents and the Board that the annual the Worth Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Polar Plunge will be held beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14, just adjacent to the Marrs-Meyer Post.
A giant pool will be set up outside the post for volunteers who want to dive in. Proceeds will benefit the Illinois Special Olympics.
“The money goes to the right place,” Nilles said.
Upcoming events
Werner also wanted to inform residents and the board that the 69th annual “All-You-Can-Eat” Breakfast and Bake Sale will be offered from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 11, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 11007 S. 76th Ave., Worth. The event is sponsored by Boy Scout Troop 668 and Cub Scout Pack 3668.
The fee is $8 for adults and $6 for children ages 3 to 6. Children under age 3 can attend for free. Seniors, ages 65 and over, can attend for $6.
The mayor said that the annual Spring Arts, Crafts and Vendor Show will be held in the gym and cafeteria at Shepard High School, 13049 S. Ridgeland Ave., Palos Heights, on Saturday, April 18. Guests should enter through door 1 or 2 in front of the school.
The event is sponsored by the Shepard High School Band Boosters. Over 150 crafters and vendors will be available. Concessions will be provided all day and parking is free. Admission is $2 per person.
Werner said that the Worth Pot of Gold Village Wide Garage Sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, July 17, and Saturday, July 18. Each year over 100 homes participate in the event.
Participants can register the sale location at the Village Hall by filling out a form for a $5 fee. The deadline to register is July 2. More information can be obtained by calling 708-448-1181.
